After almost four years as the creative director of the label, Olivier Theyskens is leaving Theory. The 37-year old Belgian designer was at the helm of the New York-based brand since 2011 after he served as creative director for Nina Ricci from 2007 to 2009. His original position called for the design of a capsule collection, entitled Theyskens’ Theory, until he was eventually given full control of the label as a whole.
This news came as quite a surprise to me because of Theyskens’ critically praised work for Theory ever since his first collection. According to statements to Women’s Wear Daily from both the designer and the label’s CEO, it seemed to be an amicable split. Their final collaborative collection will be for pre-spring/summer 2015, followed by full creative control being given to the in-house design team. Theyskens is reportedly working on other design ventures that I’m sure we will hear about in the near future.
