NICOLA FORMICHETTI DEBUTS FIRST DIESEL CAMPAIGN

Nicola Formichetti pulled from major artistic inspirations for his first campaign as the new artistic director of Diesel. Shot by Nick Knight, the director of Kanye West‘s infamous Bound 2 music video, the pre-fall 2014 campaign features a gaggle of models against a backdrop of torn scan images of male bodies.

Among the group is Japanese model Kiko Mizuhara, Formichetti’s friend. In a statement, the 37-year old designer dubbed the campaign “an homage to the digital world with the classics.” He referenced Michelangelo, Picasso, and the Sistine Chapel as direct influences on the mise en scène.

Formichetti’s first fully designed collection will be in stores this week and the campaign shows his edgy, fearless approach. The abundance of leather gives the brand a fierce attitude that will be refreshing to see in his fall designs.  His main collection campaign will debut later this summer, but this is an entertaining preview of what’s to come for the Italian fashion house that has been around for decades.

Formichetti became widely known for his avant-garde styling of Lady Gaga, but I’m sure his new position at Diesel will catapult him to a superior level of success. This ad prelude brings sex appeal, artistic flair, and high fashion, which are great signs for a clothing campaign.
