Supermodel, TV personality, and producer Tyra Banks is returning to the daytime television circuit with a new talk show. The 40-year old former Victoria’s Secret angel is executive producing and hosting a new lifestyle show that will debut in 2015. Her show is not yet titled, but will reportedly include celebrity interviews, discussion of a variety of topics with a group of lifestyle experts and, of course, focus on female empowerment.
Banks announced last week that her new show will air from Los Angeles in collaboration with Disney-ABC.Banks is obviously no stranger to the world of television. Her first talk show, The Tyra Banks Show, aired from 2005 to 2010, and The CW’s America’s Next Top Model has aired 238 episodes and inspired 26 international versions.
Do we care that Tyra is coming back with a new talk show? I wouldn’t say I’m opposed to the idea as much as I am surprised. In my mind, a woman like Tyra Banks would be too busy with her businesses to be able to film a daily talk show. Specifically, her Bankable Studios business, the film production company that People reported back in 2009 was the reason why she ended The Tyra Banks Show and would be her new focus. No shade intended, but I haven’t heard of any Tyra Banks-produced films in the past five years, so maybe that venture did not work out so well. According to my research, the production company has only since been responsible for a two-season beauty competition show called True Beauty on ABC and a web series called Fa-Fa-Fa Fashion with Tyra and fashion legend André Leon Talley, neither of which I’ve heard about or seen.
Still, it might be refreshing to bring back another familiar face to daytime television.
Bethenny has been cancelled, Barbara Walters has left The View, and The Real will premiere in the fall, featuring Loni Love, Tamar Braxton, Jeannie Mai, Adrienne Bailon, and Tamera Mowry-Housley. There is plenty of room for new, or should I say returning, blood on daytime, but I hope Tyra takes advantage of her access to those fashion industry legends for unique, exclusive segments. I also expect sophisticated content from Tyra, unlike the Maury-style appeal that started to grow from her first talk show. We’ll see what happens! I’ll be watching…
