Fashion maven and publicist Kelly Cutrone is infamous for her brutally honest opinions, especially when it comes to the industry in which she has worked for decades. When it comes to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, almost everyone has their opinion, and the America’s Next Top Model judge did not hold back in her interview with Confidenti@l:
I don’t think there’s one person who really works in the fashion industry who gives a flying f— about Kanye West.
When asked about Yeezy’s proud wife, Kelly went on to say:
I think they have no influence in the fashion world whatsoever. I mean, most people who watch the Kardashians [show] can’t afford Givenchy. I don’t mean to be mean. Are [fake vendors] on Canal St. benefiting from it? Probably, but that’s not the fashion world.
Cutrone went on to downplay KimYe’s golden appeal to designers like their close friend Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy:
There’s a movie called ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Givenchy is a good brand, but is it cutting edge? No. It’s a gazillion-year-old luxury brand from Europe.
She did give the power couple credit in one area, but she continued to hold her ground on their lack of fashion influence.
Have Kim and Kanye had an impact on pop culture? Absolutely. Do I think that Hamish Bowles wakes up in the morning, calls André Leon Talley and says, ‘Did you see those pants that Kanye was rocking on ‘SNL’? No.
I can partially understand Kelly’ s opinion. In terms of fashion as a business industry, Kim and Kanye are not showing at Fashion Week or placing collections in Barney’s (which Kanye is diligently trying to change). However, I do consider both of them major STYLE icons because of society’s undeniable obsession with what they are wearing. Their excellent taste and unapologetic pride in their looks create very rare attention from fans, consumers, stylists, and designers. Still, I wouldn’t say that they have a colossal influence on the fashion industry, but I do think they play a role.
Nowadays, because of the Internet and social media, celebrities showcasing their daily looks for an event or a day of press brings attention to new designers, trends, and stores. Kim is notorious for her fashion breakdowns on Instagram, which is basically free promotion, marketing, and even potential sales for whoever she is wearing. Sure, her vanity plays a small part, but even though most Kim K fans may not be able to afford Givenchy, seeing her in unique designer pieces might encourage them to pay more attention to fashion and work harder to pay for it.
In terms of Cutrone’s Givenchy comment, that was just pure shade.
